Staff

joshua solomon

JOSHUA SOLOMON, Director

Josh did his undergraduate studies at Bucknell University and attended Emory Medical school in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at University of Texas Southwestern in 2001. After spending the next year in Viet Nam, he returned to the University of Colorado for a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. During that time he did research on rheumatoid arthritis-induced lung disease and the effects of age on scar formation in the lung. After finishing the fellowship he returned to Viet Nam full-time to expand the scope of the foundation. He is responsible for the management of the foundation as well as project design and patient care.

NANCY NGUYEN, Co-Director

Nancy is a University of Colorado at Boulder alumni. She practices postural realignment massage therapy, Chinese herbal medicine, and acupuncture. Nancy's specializations include internal medicine, pain management, and women's health. She interned at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 2007, receiving additional training and experience. She is also currently a doctoral candidate at Oregon School of Oriental Medicine. She helps manage the direction of the foundation and is our representative in America, managing public relations and fundraising. She currently lives in Denver, Colorado and returns to Hoi An frequently.

LUU PHUOC AN, Community Health Coordinator

Luu Phuoc went to Hue College of Sciences in Hue, Vietnam and graduated with a degree in chemistry and chemical  analysis. She worked for some time with the Institute of Material Sciences as a laboratory technician. She spent time as a public health officer in the Public Health Center in Hoi An and as an office manager with the Thu Thuy Silk Company. She works full time for the Hoi An Foundation. She manages the health care projects of the foundation and directs the Heart Program. Her responsibilities include project design and implementation as well as coordination with local officials. She also takes part in direct patient care. She lives in Hoi An, Viet Nam.

MAIRE MCANN, In-Country Director

Mai is an Irish/New Zealand/Australian enrolled nurse. After having trained in New Zealand, Mai moved to Australia 20 years ago.  She has worked as a nurse for 35 years covering all areas of the health care system in New Zealand and Australia.  In 2006, she came to Hoi An for 3 months as a self funded volunteer and is still here 3 years later.  Mai joins the Hoi An Foundation with a wide range of nursing experience in both hospital and community settings.  Having spent 6 years working in the Australian outback Mai's experiences serve her well in the Hoi An Foundation's work in rural and remote areas of Quang Nam prmovince.  Mai has a keen interest in working in the more remote areas where she has seen, first hand, the depth of need for education in all areas of health with a particular emphasis on preventative health care.  Part of Mai's role in the foundation is to manage and direct patient care and to coordinate and liaise with the western doctors who volunteer for us. With all areas of living and volunteering in Viet Nam, Mai hopes to remain here indefinitely.

JESS SOLOMON, Business Manager

Jess earned a degree in Engineering and an advanced degree in Computer Science before entering the computer industry. After a few years, he founded his own company specializing in business software. He managed and directed this company as it continued to grow for 27 years.  In 2004, he merged his company with another and retired. In the last few years, he has been an advisor to various companies in  the areas of growth and strategic direction. His extensive background in business, finance and management are being utilized by the foundation as it experiences growth by expanding its projects and adding personnel.

BRIAN PENTI, Medical Liason

Brian graduated from Bostin University School of Medicine in 2004 and completed training in Family Medicine at Boston university in 2007.  He is currently employed as Assistant Inpatient Director for Clinical Education at Boston Medical Center/Boston University Department Family Medicine.  Brian assists our work by providing and coordinating our medical services as one of our medical liasons and he also takes part in direct patient care. He returns to Hoi An many times a year.

NGUYEN THI THU QUYNH, Administrative Asssistant

Quynh earned her Business and Tourism degree at Da Nang University in 2009. Previously, she was employed as a receptionist at a local hotel. Wanting to improve her English, Quynh resigned her position at the hotel and joined the Hoi An Foundation as a volunteer in July 2009. After 3 months of volunteering with the Hoi An Foundation, she has begun working with the Foundation as a fulltime employee. Initially, Quynh assisted us with our administration work.  However as her English improved, she began assisting with translating for visiting western staff and health education for our patients.  She enjoys the challenges of working with an NGO and has become a valuable member of our team.

DO VU HUNG, Assistant/Social Worker

Hung initially came to the attention of the Hoi An Foundation as a 26 year old cardiac patient. Originally, he volunteered for the Foundation but is now employed on a part-time basis.  Born & raised in Dai Loc, a poor farming area in rural Quang Nam Province, Hung knows first hand the difficulties of life for our cardiac patients.  Due to his personal experience with cardiac disease,  Hung has proven himself to be a valuable member of the team, showing his ability to quickly and easily establish a rapport with patients of all ages. As a result of his own life experiences, Hung is in an ideal position to provide us with realistic assessments of our patients' social & economic backgrounds.
